REVIEW: TORCH BY CAMBRIA HEBERT

If you can’t take the heat… stay away from the flame.

Katie Parks has been on her own since the age of fifteen. All she’s ever wanted is a place to call her own—a life that is wholly hers that no one can take away. She thought she finally had it, but with the strike of a single match, everything she worked so hard for is reduced to a pile of smoking ash. And she almost is too.

Now she’s being stalked by someone who’s decided it’s her time to die. The only thing standing in the path of her blazing death is sexy firefighter Holt Arkain.

Katie’s body might be safe with Holt… but her heart is another story.
As the danger heats up, sparks fly and the only thing Katie knows for sure is that her whole life is about to go up in flames.

Man. Poor Katie--she CANNOT catch a break. It seems like every few chapters just when she catches her breath, another attempt on her life is made. SHEESH. I would fuh-reak. Luckily she has Mr. hottie Holt to intervene and look out for her--what a sweetie.

Me too! The first part of the novel is really captivating in the way it sets up the scenes to her possible demise. My heart was racing, and every time she turned around something else was going wrong. It was like Murphy was after her with a grudge, and it was sad such a sweet girl had these things happening.

Here's the thing. This book reads like a novella (is it? I should look that up! I don't think it is). It's fast. There aren't a ton of details--as a matter of fact for probably the first 80% or so I had questions about why Katie was so alone in the world and wondering what Holt's story was. I suppose because there is so much going on I didn't mind that I was left in the dark about a lot of things. I think the anticipation and chemistry between Holt and Katie also distracted me ..hahaha.

Unfortunately, I did. Mind that is. I could not get over the aspect that a woman (Katie) would wake up in the hospital after one of those life attempts, and then just leave with a stranger. Albeit, Holt is a sweetheart, but isn't there police protective custody for things like this? I would be FA-REAKED out. I mean, I am a huge proponent of stranger danger, and have the opinion if an unknown man is trying to kill you...you probably ought to question who you trust a little bit. I did like that the story compounds on her having trust issues and getting to know Holt, but I felt less connected to their plight simply because all of this is happening without any clues as to why. I needed a little bit more before there were a lot of declarations being made (though, I did like how that was handled).

The end swoops in on you fast and furious. There is an epilogue and questions get answered ...but whoaaa...lots of things happen at the end that left me reeling. It just happened so fast. It did happen fast! I was a little hesitant to go with an It's Ok rating or an I Liked It rating, because there were a few things that totally confused me. Like why Taylor is a necessary character? Why would she go along with Holt's idea to have her stay with him? Are the police really this dense? I just overall wanted to like this one more than I did. I do already have book four in this series, when I didn't know it was a series, and I am still looking forward to reading it. It is called Text and the cover is HOT!
