REVIEW: ON THE ROCKS BY SAWYER BENNETT

NEW SERIES
BY USA TODAY BESTSELLING AUTHOR
SAWYER BENNETT

ON THE ROCKS
Last Call, #1
Adult Contemporary Romance
Released February 17th, 2014

He left to travel the world for fame and glory, but only after spurning Gabby Ward and crushing her young heart. Now Hunter Markham has come back home to the sand and salty breeze of the North Carolina Outer Banks so he can open up Last Call, a beach bar nestled among the dunes of the Atlantic.

Gabby Ward is not happy that Hunter has returned. Bitter over his rebuff years before, she’s content to stay far away from him and his dangerously charming ways.

Gabby’s well-schemed plans to ignore Hunter go up in flames when he presents an offer to her that she simply can’t refuse, throwing them together in a common quest to each reach their goals. Working together day in and day out proves to be problematic for Gabby, who soon realizes that the feelings she had for him are still very much alive. Hunter struggles to reach through to Gabby’s cold heart, all while starting a new career away from his life as a top ranked, professional surfer.

What starts out as a mutual business arrangement soon turns into a passion that neither of them can continue to deny.

Hard choices lay ahead for both of them when Hunter is offered a once in a lifetime opportunity to return to the pro surfing tour.

Choices that could destroy what they have built or take them further than they ever had dared to hope.

OUR REVIEW:

This is a new series for Sawyer Bennett and I can see that she's creating lots of opportunities for stories to come. In some ways it reminds me of the first book in the Off  series-- a very good story that is setting us up for very good stories to come. I agree. There were a lot of character introductions and letting us see a glimpse of those stories to whet our appetite. I am especially looking forward to reading about Brody, Hunter's twin brother and felon.

Gabby and Hunter are fun to read. Gabby is such a spitfire. She's mouthy and bitchy and makes absolutely no excuses for it (other than her feelings were hurt years ago). I love her sass. I love that Sawyer made her a General Contractor. I love that she's extremely loyal and has great friends. She's also got a great head on her shoulders, except when she's dealing with Hunter, and once I got to know her, I enjoyed her character. Does she make some effed up decisions...well, duh...don't we all? Hahaha. Luckily, Hunter has a good head on his fine ass shoulders and once he decides to quit bickering with Gabby, he proves to be a perfect match for her snarkiness. He's a great guy--taking care of his brother, protecting those he loves, being honest..and really just being an all around great guy.

Shel, you described Gabby perfectly. She is trying her damndest to be a little fish in a big pond in the world of construction and has the added angle of bigotry to fight against. I had many moments where I thought wow. These people are acting like grown up adults thinking through situations and not being immature...only several pages later to be proved wrong. So, just like everyone they make mistakes and let some things get the better of them. Overall though, I really loved Gabby's character even though she made me work for it for a while.

Hunter though. I enjoyed Hunter the entire way through. While he handled one particular situation badly that set the tone for the rest of their relationship, he works really hard later to atone for it. He is the voice of reason in all of the insanity, so I enjoyed getting to know him.

While their story isn't without it's bumpy parts, the angst is relatively low and the ending is very satisfying. The next book in this series looks a little darker and I'm very eager to see where Sawyer takes those characters. Exactly. I don't necessarily want to take away from this story but it does have a tone of setting up the rest of the series.
